ABOUT HOST FAMILIES
The Alexandria Aces are grateful to our wonderful host families, who provide our players with “homes away from home” during the summer season. There are many rewards to hosting a Cal Ripken League Baseball Player, including great family memories and lifetime bonds.
Like every team in the CRCBL, the Aces are always in need of new host families. Without the generous support of all our host families, there is no team. Players stay with families from early June to early August.
We want to thank all of the families that have volunteered to host players. The success of the Aces experience has been the unbelievable support of the host families throughout Northern VA and into DC and MD. We can’t do it without you!
Please know that players are responsible for their meals and often eat dinner as a team. However, you are welcome to invite a player to share food/meals with your family any time, but it is certainly not a requirement.
WHAT DO HOST FAMILIES PROVIDE?
Aces players often work jobs (such as the Aces Youth Camps) during the day, and play games at night. Therefore, their needs are relatively simple: private room, bathroom and laundry room access, a place to park a car, and a family to cheer them on.
WHAT EXPECTATIONS DO WE SHARE WITH EACH PLAYER?
No guests or visitors at the residence unless cleared with family.
No alcohol, tobacco/vaping or drugs at any time.
Clean up after all meals doing dishes and/or disposing of trash and food as needed.
No noise late at night / and know the host family will be up and moving around during morning daytime hours.
Offer to take care of other household chores as required (take out their trash and other requests).
Spend some time with kids as schedule permits (play a video game, have a chat or throw the ball). This is extremely important to host families and why many offer their homes.
When using the laundry (after finding out the best time) be sure to get it moved to the dryer and out when done rather than sitting in the machine.
Be responsible for the food you need/want. Families often offer meals, but it is not required of them.
WE HAVE OTHER TEENS IN THE HOUSE. CAN WE EXPECT THE PLAYER TO RESPECT OUR RULES?
Yes! Please share any expectations you have of them while in your home. Often if they aren’t doing something it is simply because they don’t know. They know that no alcohol, tobacco, or drugs are permitted. They also know they are not to have any guests or visitors without prior approval. Please also share when it is most convenient for them to use the washer/dryer and where they may store food and any kitchen/food limitations (ie you don’t want them storing food in their room).
HOW DOES TRANSPORTATION WORK?
About two-thirds of the players have their own car. Players who do not have cars are strategically housed close to players who do have cars, so their teammates can provide them rides. We do not expect host families to drive our players around.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OUR FAMILY GOES ON VACATION?
Almost all families travel at some point during the players stay. The players often assist with pets and mail while the family is away and they know they are guests in the home and what is conduct is expected of them by their families and coaches. However, if you are uncomfortable with them staying while you are away we can consider having the player split their time between two homes.
CAN WE REQUEST A CERTAIN TYPE OF PLAYER?
Because of the sometimes complicated logistics of placing players with allergies into pet-free families, locating players with and without cars close to each other, and placing returning players (or new players from the same university) with the previous host family, it is not always possible to honor these types of requests. However, we will do our best to fulfill this request.
WE HAVE PETS. IS THAT AN ISSUE?
We ask about allergies and whether host families have pets to ensure that allergic players aren’t housed with animals they can’t be around.
WHAT IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PLACEMENT?
Historically, we have had minimal problems with placements. The Aces players appreciate host families’ hospitality, and behave as guests in your home. If there is a minor problem, we ask that you contact the host family coordinator, who will work to try to resolve it with the player. If there is a major problem, we will remove him immediately.
WHAT ARE THE RULES ABOUT DRINKING OR DRUGS?
Drugs are strictly forbidden, as is underage drinking, although some players are over 21 and can legally drink. However, even if your player is over 21, feel free to establish your home as a no-drinking zone, and please do not give underage players alcohol. At the beginning of the season, we supply host families with a contract. Although we do ask players and families to sign that form, it really is a forum for families and players to frankly and honestly discuss the details and rules of a player’s stay with that family.
